5.  Mayoral Report 
 
Mayor Derek Norton announced the following:  
• Thanked Smyrna Little League for an awesome fundraiser night on Saturday. 
They raised a lot of money to make improvements to the park.  
• Had the pleasure of welcoming the Webelos Pack 22 Cub Scouts prior to 
today’s council meeting when he answered questions about government.  
• The annual Jonquil Festival is this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. 
• The Jonquil Jog is on May 2 which benefits Support Smyrna and the 
Campbell Educational Foundation.  
• He noted that the new early voting location will be at Smyrna First Baptist 
Church in downtown.  
• The Mayor’s Education Awards will be held this Thursday which 
celebrates the best and brightest in the community.  
• On a personal note, his daughter, Sam, went to the state gymnastics 
championships and won! 
• And his dad in Cedar Rapids, IA had an unexpected surgery, but he is home 
and recovering well.   
 
Mayor Derek Norton invited anyone running for office to come forward. 
 
Carlos Vilela, HD42, came forward and stated that he is an attorney who owns a 
one-man practice doing wills and estates. He is running because he wants to see 
change and see people transition with dignity and respect.
