B. PRC2026-014 Proclamation in recognition of Poppy Month and National Poppy Day Citywide Lisa Oakes, VP, and June Burgess, Treasurer, members of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 160, announced two programs they were able to support through donations received through the poppy distribution. Back-to-School Brigade – they were able to purchase back-to-school supplies for families at Dobbins Air Reserve Base. Operation Courage is Beautiful – they were able to provide women-centered care packages for deployed, active-duty service women Councilmember Susan Wilkinson read aloud the following proclamation: A PROCLAMATION By the Mayor of the City of Smyrna In recognition of Poppy Month and National Poppy Day May 2026 WHEREAS, America is the land of freedom, preserved and protected willingly and freely by citizen soldiers; and WHEREAS, millions who have answered the call to arms have died on the field of battle; and WHEREAS, A nation at peace must be reminded of the price of war and the debt owed to those who have died in war; and WHEREAS, the red poppy has been designated as a symbol of sacrifice of lives in all wars since 1919; and WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary has pledged to remind America annually of this debt through the distribution of the memorial flower in May, NOW, THEREFORE, I, Derek Norton, Mayor of the City of Smyrna, Georgia, do hereby proclaim the month of May in 2026, as POPPY MONTH and May 22, 2026 as NATIONAL POPPY DAY and ask that all citizens pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom by wearing the Memorial Poppy. C. Citizen’s Academy Graduation Evie Ramsey, Administrative Coordinator, explained that the Citizens’ Academy is an eleven-week program to learn about the details and inner workings of municipal functions.
