Library: 4,500+ Museum: 17 M A Y 1 1 - M A Y 1 5 P A G E 0 6 LIBRARY AND MUSEUM A new item added to the museum’s collection harkens back to a time when Smyrna was a popular stop along a major tourist route. Opened in 1915, the Dixie Highway was promoted as a safe and reliable route connecting northern states like Michigan to the sunny beaches of Florida, during an era when automobiles and long-distance road trips were still a new experience for many Americans. Businesses such as the Sunny Side Inn emerged to accommodate weary travelers seeking a place to rest along their journey. This postcard served both as an advertisement and a souvenir, offering today’s Smyrnans a glimpse into a business that once stood across from what is now Campbell Middle School on Atlanta Road. THE SUNNY SIDE INN AND DIXIE HIGHWAY Interested in historic preservation but don’t know where to start?
