VISITORS Library: 5627 Museum: 18 Library Director Mary Moore recently secured a local treasure for the Museum’s collection at a Vinings estate sale: a salt-glazed stoneware jug. The piece was most likely crafted at a Viningsarea pottery for the R. M. Rose Distillery, which operated in the Gilmore area just south of present-day Smyrna. R. M. Rose himself was a highly successful liquor wholesaler in Atlanta from 1867 to 1905. This artifact will help the Museum share the complex history of temperance, prohibition, and alcohol consumption in Smyrna. ARTIFACT OF THE WEEK S E P T E M B E R 1 5 - S E P T E M B E R 1 9 P A G E 0 5 LIBRARY AND MUSEUM This past Saturday, six volunteers came together to clean headstones and clear brush at Daniell Cemetery in Bennett Woods. The cemetery, established in 1862 before the Civil War reached Smyrna, holds deep historic significance for our community. While the front gate isn’t quite that old, it had gathered years of moss and lichen. Thanks to a dedicated neighbor who spent more than two hours scrubbing it clean, the gate now looks nearly new.
