6:00 PM City of Smyrna Mayor and Council Meeting 2800 King Street SE Human Resources Training Room Page 3 of 9 Keep Smyrna Beautiful (yearlong project) On Saturday, April 18th, we participated in a volunteer cleanup hosted by KSB! As part of our yearlong project, we wanted to do something meaningful for our community’s environment. With KSB’s help, we spent two hours in the morning cleaning up litter on the East-West Connector. We collected 10 full trash bags and 3 full recycling bags - totaling 195 pounds and helping clean up our Smyrna community. Collab with Columbus, GA Youth Advisory Council On Wednesday, April 1st we reviewed and voted on a resolution from Elijah Crawford of the Columbus GA Youth Advisory Council. The resolution proposed for a new statewide youth council that works to advise Georgia’s Governor and the Georgia General Assembly on youth issues. The council is currently working with Senator Howard of the Georgia State Senate to establish a Georgia Youth Advisory Council. We were asked to add any resolutions supporting this initiative, which we voted to approve this opportunity. Summary of Activities Governor’s Mansion Tour - We visited the Governor’s mansion in late February - We got to see many historical artifacts dating back hundreds of years and the stories behind them. - We also got to tour the mansion grounds, seeing things like the beehives where they collect honey, the chicken coop, and the First Lady’s garden! Sheriff’s Office • We had the opportunity to tour the Cobb County Sheriff's office on April 29th. • Students met for a conversation with Sheriff Owens and other officers in the academy, which involved getting to know about the works of the office and little about the history of people on the staff. • We were also able to partake in activities such as taking a look at the shooting range and testing out the crime scene simulator. Smyrna Fire Department We learned about… - The Smyrna Fire Department responding to fires, medical emergencies, and rescuing in our community. - How they have multiple stations to provide quick response across the community. - Our Firefighters are trained to handle both fire and medical situations. - The department focuses on fire prevention through education and safety inspections. - The department works with schools and provides various community events to teach fire safety. - Firefighters regularly train to stay prepared for emergencies. - The department coordinates with other emergency services for effective response. - We also met the chief and the team who were on call that day Smyrna Police Department On January 21, the Smyrna Youth Council had the opportunity to tour the Smyrna Police Department. We were able to meet with the Deputy Chief and other officers who kindly gave us a tour. The PD staff answered our pressing questions, and provided us with insightful information about public safety.
