Yvette Miller Ward 2 Councilmember - Latonia P. Hines ISSUE AND BACKGROUND: Appointed by Gov. Roy Barnes in July 1999, Judge M. Yvette Miller made judicial history in Georgia as the first Black woman to serve on the court. She again made history by becoming the first Black woman to serve two years as the court’s chief judge in 2009. Prior to joining and repeatedly retaining her seat on the intermediate appellate bench, Miller garnered judicial experience as director and judge of the Appellate Division and administrative law judge for the State Board of Workers’ Compensation from 1989 to 1992 and as a trial court judge for the State Court of Fulton County from 1996 to 1999. Before taking up the gavel, Miller served as an assistant district attorney in Fulton County and senior in-house litigation counsel for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA). Miller has also worked in private practice as a general counsel for an automobile dealership in South Georgia. Miller is a graduate of Mercer University Walter F. George School of Law and was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in October 1981. RECOMMENDATION / REQUESTED ACTION:
