MUSEUM CLOSURE The Smyrna Museum will be closed from Thanksgiving Day through Saturday, November 29. We will reopen for regular hours on Wednesday, December 3. LIBRARY AND MUSEUM NATIVE AMERICAN LEARNING KITS The holiday slowdown gives Museum staff time to focus on projects such as expanding our Native American heritage trunks. We are currently duplicating this hands-on learning kit so it can be shared with local elementary schools. Some components (like corn husk dolls and turtle shell rattles) require a bit of assembly, but they offer powerful teaching opportunities. These items highlight how Cherokee and Muscogee Creek people made purposeful use of materials that might otherwise be discarded, such as corn husks left after processing or turtle shells remaining after scavenging or hunting. Corn husk dolls were used to entertain children while teaching lessons about vanity and responsibility through the traditional story of the “doll with no face.” Turtle shell rattles played an essential role in ceremonies; women often wore them on their legs and helped keep the rhythm during tribal dances.
