DESIGNING LOCAL 1919 DEMONSTRATED EXPERIENCE Elementary students also participated by painting the school’s sidewalks with poetry and graphics. This was one of the most re- warding elements because it demonstrated that citizen participa- tion and creative engagement can result in community pride and a positive outlook. Once the artists were selected and installation locations were approved, the design team and City staff coordinated the entire installa- tion for one week. The artists were free to paint patterns, forms, and other graphic elements within the physical boundaries of the future bump out. They worked during daylight hours throughout the week and the City provided traffic control and other safety measures.
