FIRE PREVENTION 
Function 
The Bureau of Fire Prevention (BOFP) currently has six staff members: The Fire Marshal (Deputy Fire Chief 
of Administrative Services), Assistant Fire Marshal (Captain), three Deputy Fire Marshals (Lieutenant), one 
Administrative Assistant, and one part-time Inspector. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is responsible for 
the protection of life and property from fire, explosion and/or other related hazards through the 
enforcement of adopted fire codes and standards. 
Major Goals & Objectives (FY 2026) 
1. Ensure that administrative position is aligned to optimize service delivery 
• Reclassification of the Administrative Assistant position to Administrative Coordinator 
2. Ensure the safety of building occupants by building upon the current fire/life safety inspection 
program 
• Focus on existing commercial occupancy inspections, prioritizing assembly & industrial 
• Develop a remote inspection program for certain inspection types 
• Pre-incident Plans 
3. Ensure origin and cause investigation documentation meets NFPA921 and Smyrna Police policy  
• Review evidence inventory and storage 
4. Streamline administrative fire prevention processes to enhance operations 
• Improve False Alarm Reduction Program 
• Review and update current website content 
• Standardize policies/procedures - Lexipol 
• Completion of paper building record archive 
• Review/update Fire Prevention ordinances 
5. Enhance expertise and leadership in fire safety by continuously updating knowledge on current 
fire prevention technologies and regulations 
• Achieve Fire Investigative Technician credential through the IAAI 
• Achieve Fire Marshal credential through CPSE 
• Obtain Crowd Manager training 
• Receive NFPA 1730 standard training 
Performance Measures 
• Number of inspections performed by type 
• Number of investigations performed 
• Plans review requests by type 
• Certificates of Occupancies issued 
• Number of fire safety contacts 
• ISO rating schedule (CRR) 
• Agency Accreditation self-assessment
