INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 
Function 
Division 15350 funds the administrative and operational functions of the City of Smyrna’s Information 
Technology Department. This division includes budget allocations for the IT Director, Assistant IT 
Director, System Administrator, Network & Server Engineer, Web Administrator, and IT Support 
Specialist. The department is responsible for managing and supporting the City’s computer systems, 
network infrastructure, cybersecurity, telecommunication systems, surveillance cameras, access 
controls, website, and select A/V systems. Some of the responsibilities assigned include: 
• Network infrastructure/network design, implementation and management, including the 
network used by Smyrna Department of Transportation 
• Computer desktop hardware and software installation, training and support 
• Maintaining the physical and virtual server environments 
• Managing the backup of critical systems, virus protection, and Internet firewalls 
• New system implementation, software and hardware consultation for major system such as 
ERP, Public Safety, Video Cameras, or Time Keeping 
• Manage all the major software systems in use by the city 
• Support the ATS traffic control system and security camera systems 
• Manage the city’s cybersecurity systems including but not limited to two-factor authentication, 
SSL VPN, firewalls, etc 
• Respond to cybersecurity incidents and ensure the city is adhering to any requirements or laws 
related to cybersecurity. 
• Manage the City’s communications including Internet, VPN, cell phones, analog phones, VoIP 
telephone system, and VoIP call recording system.  
• Council chamber audio/video systems, streaming of meetings 
• Video storage for security, police car and body cameras 
• User support via training and helpdesk 
• Maintain the City Website and Intranet 
There is considerable overlap within the department which functions as a team to accomplish the 
department’s goals.  With cross-training, members of the department can assist each other when the 
workload and needs demand. 
• The Director is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic technology plan for the 
City’s information technology and managing the staff of the department.  
• The Assistant IT Director manages the IT Support staff and ensures request for IT support are 
resolved in a timely manner.  
• The System Administrator monitors and maintains the City’s major software systems with 
primary responsibility for the City's ERP and Public Safety Systems.
